This novel is about a zookeeper's son, Pi Patel or to be exact, Piscine Molitor Patel, who shares a lifeboat with a hyena, a broken leg zebra, a female orang-utan(Orange Juice), and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger(Richard Parker) after the sinking of a cargo ship. The story begins with how Pi got his name and his childhood life in the zoo. Then, the story continues with the his leaving India, the sinking of the cargo ship and he shares his life with other animals on the boat.
I've read one of the book reviews about this book and the reader mentioned that her favourite part will be the last few pages of the book. I agreed with her. I like how the author comes out with a different version of the story which involves of a Taiwanese sailor, a cook, Pi's mother and himself. I couldn't control myself to laugh at it when every time I read this part:
"So the Taiwanese sailor is the zebra, his mother is the orang-utan, the cook is...the hyena – which means he's the tiger!"
I like to read stories of how people strive to survive in their life which probably something we can learn from the story. Although I quite like this book but it will not be in my favourite list.
I've jotted down some of my favourite quotes from the book:
- Life of Pi - Chapter 1 - 20
- Life of Pi - Chapter 21 - 40
- Life of Pi - Chapter 41 - 60
- Life of Pi - Chapter 61 - 100
