Food Wars!, Vol. 36: Shokugeki no Soma: Shokugeki no Soma, Yuto Tsukuda, Shun Saeki & Yuki Morisaki

cover

This final volume begins with the story of Erina's parents, especially Erina's father telling a story of his life after he met Erina's mother. He wishes that he can save his wife and his daughter, but in the end, both are suffering because of their status as God of Tongue.

When Soma serves the fried rice as the dish in the battle against Saiba, everyone is shocked. Saiba had served a dish which has the ability that caused the stripping effect, but Soma only serves a fried rice dish which combines all the five cuisines. The dish also is cooked with the memories of his mother. The difference between Saiba and Soma's dish is Soma's dish gives more of his personal flavour, whereas Saiba's dish is lacking his own identity. After all, he is using other chefs' knives to gain their superpower for his cooking.

In the final battle, Soma will be fighting against Erina. The theme is to cook a dish that never before seen on earth. This volume also reveals Erina's grandfather's plan, which he has been executing all these time to save their family's curse that falls on the God of Tongue. I have to admit that the revelation of the plan is another ruin to this story. I don't know why I will feel being cheated on reading the entire manga after this revelation.

I have mixed feelings for the ending, and I'm not sure how to express my thoughts about it. Probably the story has lost its peak for quite some time and should be ended earlier. I don't feel surprised about the ending because there is nothing spectacular about it. I feel the entire story was really outstanding and exceptional up to the point after they become Elite Ten. And that's it, that is the full-stop for me. The remaining chapters or volumes are just irrelevant, especially the character 'Saiba'. It's not a bad idea to tell more about Erina's mother and to make Erina understand herself more, but I don't see there's a point of having Saiba exists in this story. This final volume begins with the story of Erina's parents, especially Erina's father telling a story of his life after he met Erina's mother.
